Perros y Palenques / Distillery Dogs

Perros y Palenques is a collection of photographs, taken during Anna Bruce’s years documenting mezcal in Oaxaca. She always hoped for a meaningful way to share them, but it was during the period of quarantine that they resolved themselves into a book. The uncertain times gave her the impetus to reach out and engage Oaxaca’s creative community - to connect and collaborate - making this project a reality.
Palenques are communal, family-run spaces where agave spirits are distilled. Animals are integral to this artisanal production. Horses or an ox pull the tahona, a heavy stone mill used for crushing the agave. Cats, goats and chickens, more often than not accompanied by a turkey or two, roam the yard. And those distillery dogs… whether you find a wiry old boy or a bundle of scruffy puppies… they are great characters and an unmistakable part of palenque life.
It was these dogs that inspired the theme of this collection, where each artist has responded to the idea of “Perros y Palenques / Distillery Dogs”.
This book is being sold in Oaxaca for $200 pesos, all of which will be donated to fund Caravana Canina and TeoTails spay and neuter campaigns and other dog rescue efforts.
The book is available for sale at Convivio and the Coyote Aventuras office in Oaxaca. It will be available for sell internationally soon.
