Lulu is a goofy gal who’s ready for any adventure even with 3 legs.

Lulu’s story is an incredible one. She was found at a Penmex along the southern highway in Oaxaca with her back leg bone broken out of her skin; she had been run over. She had been the Pemex gas station’s dog and while they cared for her, they didn’t have the resources or access that she desperately needed.

Payton and Mikaela contacted Layla who recommended our Vet friends Jonaira & Brisa at JJ Mascota in Xoxo. After we attempted to sew her wound closed, it became clear we had to amputate. But then something else came up in her x-ray: 6 bullets throughout her body. Major surgery followed to amputate her back leg, and an attempt to remove as many of the bullet shards as safely possible. When we finally thought she could begin to recover, another unsavoury surprise arose: her broken leg had been exposed on the street for too long, and now a rare bone infection that causes necrosis began. Lulu began losing massive parts of skin, they just fell off dead and exposed her flesh.

Yet through all of this Lulu remained gentle, joyful, grateful and strong. After weeks of intensive care she came to my home to continue her recovery. We began physical therapy and soon she was running in the forest with the other dogs; the biggest smile on her face.

Today Lulu is a great dog full of joy, very respectful of the house, playful and social with the other dogs, affectionate with humans, and a big food lover. She’s trained on and off leash, in the car, in the house and around town. She’s quite chill during the day but when it’s time to walk she’s excited for the adventure and keeps up with the whole pack, and she loves the water.

Lulu does have a high hunt instinct so cats or other small animals such as chickens are not a good fit. Her leg-amputation truly doesn’t affect other than she can’t jump up well. She can still climb stairs, run, play and she’s very fit and active. She’s really your classic goofy, affectionate yet also independent, low-fuss, all around great dog. She would do well in a family with children or other dogs, or as a companion dog.

Lulu is a wonderful mix of independent but affectionate, playful but low-maintenance. She would thrive in:

Lulu fue rescatada por una de nuestras colaboradoras, Layla, y patrocinada por Payton y Mikaela.

Lulu es una perrita divertida y alegre, siempre lista para cualquier aventura —incluso con solo tres patitas.

Su historia es verdaderamente increíble. Fue encontrada en una gasolinera Pemex a lo largo de la carretera sur de Oaxaca, con el hueso de una pata trasera expuesto: había sido atropellada. Había sido la perrita del lugar, y aunque las personas del Pemex la querían, no tenían los recursos ni el acceso al cuidado que ella necesitaba desesperadamente.

Payton y Mikaela contactaron a Layla, quien recomendó a nuestras veterinarias amigas Jonaira y Brisa de JJ Mascota en Xoxo. Tras intentar cerrar su herida, se hizo evidente que era necesario amputar la pierna. Pero las radiografías revelaron algo más: seis balas distribuidas en su cuerpo. Se realizó una cirugía mayor para amputar su pata trasera y extraer la mayor cantidad posible de fragmentos de bala de manera segura. Cuando pensábamos que por fin podría comenzar su recuperación, surgió otra mala noticia: su pata rota había estado demasiado tiempo expuesta, y una rara infección ósea con necrosis comenzó a dañar su piel. Lulu empezó a perder grandes partes de piel muerta, dejando su carne al descubierto.

A pesar de todo, Lulu se mantuvo gentil, alegre, agradecida y fuerte. Tras semanas de cuidados intensivos, llegó a mi casa para continuar su recuperación. Comenzamos fisioterapia y, poco después, ya corría por el bosque con los demás perros, con la sonrisa más grande en su rostro.

Hoy, Lulu es una perrita maravillosa: llena de alegría, muy respetuosa en casa, juguetona y sociable con otros perros, cariñosa con los humanos y amante de la comida. Está entrenada tanto con correa como sin ella, viaja bien en coche, se comporta en casa y en la ciudad. Es tranquila durante el día, pero cuando llega la hora del paseo, se emociona y mantiene el ritmo de toda la manada —además, le encanta el agua.

Lulu tiene un fuerte instinto de caza, por lo que no puede convivir con gatos u otros animales pequeños, como gallinas. Su amputación no le afecta más allá de que no puede saltar con facilidad. Aun así, puede subir escaleras, correr y jugar perfectamente; es fuerte, ágil y muy activa. Es la típica perrita divertida, cariñosa, independiente y sin muchas complicaciones —una compañera maravillosa.

Lulu es una mezcla perfecta de independencia y cariño, juguetona pero de bajo mantenimiento.
