Lulu

Lulu was rescued by one of our partner rescuers Layla, & sponsored by Payton & Mikaela.

Lulu is a goofy gal who’s ready for any adventure, even with 3 legs.

Lulu’s story is an incredible one.  She was found by our dear friends Payton & Mikaela at a Penmex along the southern highway in Oaxaca with her back leg bone broken out of her skin; she had been run over. She had been the Penmex gas station’s dog and while they cared for her, they didn’t have the resources or access that she desperately needed. Payton and Mikaela contacted me and I recommended our Vet friends Jonaira & Brisa at JJ Mascota in Xoxo. After we attempted to sew her wound closed, it became clear we had to amputate. But then something else came up in her x-ray: 6 bullets throughout her body. Major surgery followed to amputate her back leg, and an attempt to remove as many of the bullet shards as safely possible. When we finally thought she could begin to recover, another unsavoury surprise arose: her broken leg had been exposed on the street for too long, and now a rare bone infection that causes necrosis began. Lulu began losing massive parts of skin, they just fell off dead and exposed her flesh. 

Yet through all of this Lulu remained gentle, joyful, grateful and strong. After weeks of intensive care she came to my home to continue her recovery. We began physical therapy and soon she was running in the forest with the other dogs; the biggest smile on her face. 

Today Lulu is a great dog full of joy, very respectful of the house, playful and social with the other dogs, affectionate with humans, and a big food lover. She’s trained on and off leash, in the car, in the house and around town. She’s quite chill during the day but when it’s time to walk she’s excited for the adventure and keeps up with the whole pack, and she loves the water. She does have a high hunt instinct so cats or other small animals such as chickens are not a good fit. Her leg-amputation truly doesn’t affect other than she can’t jump up well. She can still climb stairs, run, play and she’s very fit and active. She’s really your classic goofy, affectionate yet also independent, low-fuss, all around great dog. She would do well in a family with children or other dogs, or as a companion dog.

Lulu fue rescatada por Layla, una de nuestras rescatistas asociadas, y patrocinada por Payton y Mikaela.

Lulu es una chica muy traviesa, lista para cualquier aventura, incluso con tres patas.

La historia de Lulu es increíble. Nuestros queridos amigos Payton y Mikaela la encontraron en una gasolinera Penmex en la carretera sur de Oaxaca con el hueso de la pata trasera desprendido de la piel; había sido atropellada. Era la perra de la gasolinera Penmex y, aunque la cuidaron, no contaban con los recursos ni el acceso que necesitaba desesperadamente. Payton y Mikaela me contactaron y les recomendé a nuestras amigas veterinarias Jonaira y Brisa de JJ Mascota en Xoxo. Después de intentar suturar su herida, se hizo evidente que teníamos que amputarla. Pero entonces apareció algo más en su radiografía: seis balazos en todo el cuerpo. Le realizaron una cirugía mayor para amputarle la pata trasera e intentaron extraer la mayor cantidad posible de fragmentos de bala de forma segura. Cuando finalmente pensamos que podía empezar a recuperarse, nos topamos con otra desagradable sorpresa: su pata rota había estado expuesta en la calle demasiado tiempo, y ahora comenzaba una rara infección ósea que causa necrosis. Lulu empezó a perder grandes trozos de piel; se le caían muertos, dejando su piel al descubierto.

Sin embargo, a pesar de todo esto, Lulu se mantuvo dulce, alegre, agradecida y fuerte. Tras semanas de cuidados intensivos, vino a mi casa para continuar su recuperación. Empezamos fisioterapia y pronto ya corría por el bosque con los otros perros; una sonrisa enorme en su rostro.

Hoy, Lulu es una perrita estupenda, llena de alegría, muy respetuosa con la casa, juguetona y sociable con los demás perros, cariñosa con los humanos y una gran amante de la comida. Está entrenada con y sin correa, en el coche, en casa y por la ciudad. Es bastante tranquila durante el día, pero a la hora de pasear, le entusiasma la aventura y sigue el ritmo de toda la manada; además, le encanta el agua. Tiene un gran instinto de caza, por lo que no se adapta bien a gatos ni otros animales pequeños como gallinas. La amputación de su pata no le afecta, salvo que no puede saltar bien. Aún puede subir escaleras, correr, jugar y está muy en forma y activa. Es la típica perra juguetona, cariñosa, pero también independiente, tranquila y genial en todos los sentidos. Se adaptaría bien a una familia con niños u otros perros, o como perro de compañía.
